What to do This Winter in Colorado (Besides Skiing)

In Active Lifestyle Living by Doug Phelps

There’s no doubt that our champagne powder and pristine slopes are a huge draw for anyone vacationing or wintering in Colorado. But if skiing isn’t your thing, there are a multitude of other winter highlights to check out.

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks

Outdoor ice skating abounds in the Denver metro area and beyond. Head downtown for a skate a Skyline Park or up to Evergreen Lake. Several of Colorado’s State Parks also have pond skating, including Cherry Creek and Golden Gate Canyon. You might also go for a skate in one of several mountain towns, including Estes Park, Crested Butte, and Ouray. Many ski resorts have outdoor ice skating as well.

Sledding/Tubing

Sledding or tubing is a great activity for the whole family. And, Colorado has plenty of excellent hills. Try the tubing hills at Vail, Keystone, Steamboat, Winter Park/Fraser, or Copper Mountain. Many hills even boast lifts to carry you and your tubes back up for you.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing can be a great way to experience the Colorado winter and to get into the backcountry. Rocky Mountain National park has dozens of trails, and you can even take a ranger-led group tour.

Snowmobiling

If you’re looking for something with a little more adrenaline, consider going snowmobiling. It’s great for thrills and for viewing Colorado’s beauty. There are miles and miles of trails across the state, but check out Grand LakeWinter ParkLeadvilleBuena Vista and South Fork to get started.

Happy Colorado winter-playing!
