In Active Lifestyle Living by Doug Phelps

Have you ever teed off on the course and glanced over to the beautiful homes alongside the hole, wishing that were your house? Are you an avid golfer whose trip out to the course is too long of a drive?

Whether you are in the home purchase market or not, the pristine conditions and challenging scenery of Colorado golf courses are sure to help you perfect your overall golf game. Many of these Colorado golf courses have incredible mountain views built right into them.

There isn’t a better place to hit your best shots, have fun, and post your very best score. You will surely have your ability tested and your game improved after a round on one of these courses.

If you are looking to get back on the course today and play a round, here are the 10 best Colorado golf courses for you to try. I break them down into five categories and list a public and a private course in each.

Watch out though, you may be tempted to move out next to some of these courses the minute you finish your round!

1. For the No-Fuss Golfer

Teeing off for a look at some of the very best golf courses in Denver, our first is University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch. Home to the University of Denver golf team, this excellent par 72 course is newer and has quickly established itself as one of the best in the state.

The University of Denver Golf Club  is notable for its famed designer, World Golf Hall-of-Famer Hale Irwin. During a lengthy career, Irwin won 3 U.S. Open Championships and 20 times on the PGA Tour. If you are interested in living here, here is a listing for homes for sale near the course.

There’s also Pinehurst Country Club, a pristine private course in Southwest Denver. Watch out for challenging dog-legs to the left and right to test your driving accuracy at Pinehurst. Don’t forget to browse for homes right off the course whenever you tee off at Pinehurst.

2. For Players Who Value A Spectacular Scenery

Every course is beautiful, especially in Colorado, but these two really take it up a notch. That is, of course, if you aren’t hooking your drives and shots right into the nearby mountains!

The public Arrowhead Golf Course perfectly encapsulates the Colorado area with soaring red rock formations, challenging holes, and a breath-taking view of the mountains. You won’t be able to turn your eyes away, so why not find a spot to live there permanently?

Elevated at 7,000 feet, the private Country Club at Castle Pines also leaves golfers shaking their heads with the sights to behold on every hole. Wind will be a factor, and the designers have challenged players by having each hole run in a different direction than the last.

You could have a better chance to master the trickery if you decide to possibly live there today.

3. For the More Relaxed, Fun Golfer

Our incredible tour of courses continues with the duo of fantastic Riverdale Golf Courses. Created by legendary course architect Pete Dye, the Dunes and Knolls courses are two of the most popular public courses to the north of Denver.

Dye’s Dunes course is a homage to the links style of courses in Scotland, otherwise known as the home of golf. If you are an avid public golfer, you must  check out these courses and the surrounding area of homes.

One of the oldest courses on our list is Cherry Hills Country Club. If you play here, you will be walking where legends were made, as numerous PGA Tour events have been held at Cherry Hills. That includes three memorable PGA Championships, golf’s fourth Major. You have a chance to live near one of the very few places where golf’s biggest champions once dazzled crowds.

4. For Even More Scenic Inland Golfing

With mountains in the distance and a luxurious green landscape below, the underrated Bear Dance Golf Club is an extremely popular public course. It has been voted numerous times as one of the best Colorado golf courses, and they call themselves a “hidden gem” compared to some of the higher-profile options.

There are some hidden gem homes for sale right off the course as well. When golfing in Colorado, you will experience everything, even a round on sacred ground like Bear Dance.

Then there is the private Perry Park Country Club, another course with great scenery and impressive views.

With the great challenge of numerous holes built around lakes of water and a cave on the 11th tee that has carvings dating from the 1860’s, you will want to play this course over and over again. Maybe it would just be simpler to go ahead and look into moving there.

5. For Fans of the “Golden Bear”

Winding down our countdown of 10 of the finest golf courses in Colorado, let’s take a look at two designed by the greatest himself: Jack Nicklaus. To anyone who has played or certainly ever watched golf, they know the mark Nicklaus has left on the game with his 18 Major Championships.

Beyond a championship golfing career, Nicklaus also designed numerous gem courses as well, such as Breckenridge Golf Club. Created along an unusual spot that was once heavily mined, this Nicklaus course was completed in the 1980s.

Finally, another golf course imagined from the great mind of Nicklaus is the private and prestigious Cherry Creek Country Club. Always an area of interest to golfers, Cherry Creek is noted for having their award-winning course conditions kept up as well as anywhere in the country. As always, don’t forget to browse the available housing right off the course that the great one Nicklaus designed.
